"Fine," Sam said, "I love you mother"

"What? You think I don't love you," Pam asked.

"Are you kidding me," Sam smirked, "Of course you don't love me. You're always getting mad at me"

"Yes. I'm always getting mad at you because I love you."

"Oh like that's not the world's most common excuse ever," Sam said.

"Samantha you are like me. I had NO limits. I had NO rules. I had NOBODY to guide me and you know what happened. I got pregnant at age 14 with you and Melody. I got arrested several times. If someone had taken the time to discipline me I wouldn't have been a mess."

"But you're never hard on Melody," Sam said.

"You and Melody are two different people," Pam said, "Melody is sensitive. You're a little hard edged. Melody needs the sunlight. You need a rain storm. Don't you think it hurts me to see you resent me? But I love you too much to be selfish and do what I want. I am your mother and my job and responsibility as your mother is to raise you to be all that you can be."

"I never thought of it like that."

"I know you didn't," Pam said, "and I'd rather you hate me then hate yourself later in life. I'd rather you hate me then not respect yourself. Samantha Pucket you are my daughter and I am proud to say so. I love you enough to let you hate me when it's best for you."

"Well I don't like when you get mad at me," Sam said.

"Like I like getting mad at you? I don't. But being a mother means doing what's right for your children. It means loving them the right way."

Sam knew her mother was right and she understood her now.
